Watermelon Mahjong is a tile-matching game with fruit and outdoor themes. The moves and rules of the game are similar to many other popular online Mahjong games. The player is tasked with removing single- and multi-layer patterns from 36 stunning animated outdoor scenes. They can only remove the tiles in matching pairs based on identical icons or categories.
The main tiles feature fruit icons, such as apples, avocados, bananas, blueberries, cherries, figs, grapes, lemons, oranges, pears, pineapples, plums, strawberries and, of course, watermelons. Secondary bonus tiles come from the Flowers and Seasons categories. The tiles have an F or S mark and a plant or weather-related icon, such as a flower, leaf or snowflake.
The game displays one unique pattern per level. The player can only pair uncovered tiles that have either a left or right side unblocked by any other tiles. The game displays the number of tiles available at any given time and a timer in the upper-right area. At the end of each level, the player receives a score based on a time bonus.
Watermelon Mahjong has three extremely helpful tools in the upper-left area. It gives the player the ability to reverse a previous move with an Undo button, highlight a pair of tiles in green with a Hint button, and shuffle the tiles into new positions with a Mix button. The player receives one free hint at the start of the entire game and three free shuffle moves at the start of each new level. If they need additional help, they must watch advertisement videos.
